I have been writing fiction in one form or another for twenty years. Bitten by the Alpha represents my first foray into publishing my work for the whole world to see. The Consort of the Werewolf King series is a high heat paranormal romance between a young scientist, William, and a mature alpha werewolf who wants to bring him into his pack. But first, Brian must bring him to his knees, where he knows William belongs.

I’ve enjoyed erotica since I was a university student myself. Free from the constraints of home, and living in a city for the first time, I would take the trains through London. While there, I would visit the bookshops in the stations and nervously hang around killing time and waiting for people to move away from the best bookshelves. 

In the late 90’s, Black Lace and Nexus (imprints from the same publisher) were the last word in erotica publishing. Their decidedly British brand of erotica shaped my interests and desires and exposed me to all sorts of delicious kinks from the BDSM spectrum. Some of those are delightful and many are things I would never try in a million years, but may still get a frisson of pleasure from reading. I don’t recall werewolves being a ‘thing’ back then but I made a number of attempts to write erotic fiction over the years since.

Over the years I grew to enjoy those books which featured the odd scene between two men, usually rugged and handsome. As my tastes broadened, I found myself quite happy to read more of that sort of thing. I particularly enjoyed reading stories about women who take charge of a man and force him to apply his mouth to another man, be they a submissive or a dominant. It was especially erotic when the domme found pleasure in the sub performing as ordered, purely for her benefit, rather than for his own sexual desire. That’s the heart of the forced-bi fantasy – it’s all consensual but the idea is that the male sub isn’t truly bisexual but will play with another man because it pleases his mistress. That level of submission is hot, even if it’s just a fantasy.

I’ve written all sorts of erotic stories, chatted in forums with people and I’m even old enough to have roleplayed out fantasies in the early chat programs, based on MUD architecture.

My stories about werewolves exist because I wanted to see if I could at least cover my costs as an author by writing about men who enjoy going to their knees and wrapping their lips around… other men. The imagery turns me on but I love my erotica to have a plot as well. That’s why the world building is so important to me. I grew up as a roleplayer and avid reader and when I started reading erotica, it was the material that had a plot that appealed to me the most. I don’t really just want to read or write about a meaningless series of sexual encounters. I want the books to show character development and have a story arc and other things going on.

In that respect, the first four books have done well on some things but perhaps there should have been an antagonist from the beginning. I hope to improve my writing over time and many well-known experts have repeated the rule of thumb that your first million words are not good. I’ve no idea how much I wrote before these books but it was piecemeal for a lot of purposes and some of it remained unfinished.

When I write the next books in the series then, I’ll have a better outline that aims to keep the story on track. I’ve had trouble keeping books down to novella length but I’m working on that. I don’t want to shortchange the books on plot, action, character development, or totally filthy sexual play.

Well, that was a lot and it took several attempts to write it and not just talk about the plot of the books. I hope it gives you some insight into me and my writing though and that you’ll find it interesting.

What I’ll do on my Break: Future Projects

I think the last thing a reader wants to hear from an author whose work they’ve enjoyed, or even just tolerated, is that it’ll be a while before the next book. These days, there are a couple of big name fantasy authors who have left their fans begging for me for years, while they wordsmith their work.

Fortunately for my readers, I write quickly, because you’re in a hurry and I’m not that smart.* As an example, I wrote a first draft section of over 9,000 words in one, admittedly long, day recently. I can do that, when I’m being a good little author.** Procrastination is the enemy of my success. For instance, right now I’m updating this page instead of doing accounts. Ahem.

What this means is that I can produce work at a healthy pace, enough to supply you with more books than some people think is credible for one author. These people haven’t heard how Stephen King wrote Cujo (look it up, he literally cannot remember writing it). Think about a chef chopping vegetables and how much quicker they can do it. Or how much quicker that bike messenger is than you are at the park you cycle in once a year. It’s just about practice and I’ve been typing everything I wrote since I was 17. One day I hope to be able to make a good effort at dictation and then I’ll really be quick. Yes, I have writer friends who have put out over 300,000 words in 2019 by the end of April. These are the people I want to emulate.

“Yes,” I hear you say, “that’s all very uninteresting to people who aren’t writers themselves and really rather rambling. But what are you doing with your break? Will you be using it to get to the point any time soon?”

Thanks for asking. My plan is to move on to the first few books in my next series and get those out as quickly as possible. Firstly this gives my brain a break and all those little moments where I come back to the CotWK series (out walking, in the shower, shopping) will allow me to work out all the little kinks*** in the story. Secondly, I get to make serious progress on an idea I’ve been playing around with almost as long as the first series. Thirdly, it makes financial sense to put another series out there as it may be of more interest to readers. 

*Points if you can recognise the podcast about writing that inspired that line which I’m reasonably sure will only amuse me 😀

**But, unless I’m on my knees, I’m rarely that good. *looks angelic*

***Kinks in this case meaning, a sharp twist which creates a problem but also, in a happy coincidence, the types of play that William will be involved with

The Next Project – A Steampunk World Full of Capable Heroines with a Lust for Adventure!

The next series I’m working on will be The Tribulations of Dawn, set in a steampunk universe in which Queen Victoria ascends the throne as she did in reality but from there our histories diverge. In this world, the young Queen has a much more liberal view of life and the future of Britain. Not to be cowed by the courtiers or government, she outwits every man jack of the old guard and brings about a political, cultural and sexual revolution.

But I digress, some of you are only here for the werewolf stories and won’t be interested in steampunk which will have impossible but not paranormal elements and certainly not werewolves, gay, straight or otherwise. It won’t seem like good news that I’m writing these books then but take heart, I’ll be back to CotWK as soon as possible and fingers crossed, sooner than you think.

When I wrapped up Initiated by the Pack, I went back to see how much of the world I’ve been thinking about that I’d actually written down. You may have noticed I already put one book, Dawn and the London Society Governesses, Young Ladies of Quality and Serving Girls live on Amazon a full year ago (as I write this in May 2019). So that’s one book in the series done already.

But I’ve got a lot more done than that. There was a first draft for a Prequel short story (which sets up the first book but isn’t required reading) as well as drafts of the first complete book, and 70% of the draft of the second. There were outlines for a couple more and I’m now adding to those. The Prequel is now edited and I’m working through the edits of the first book as well as finishing the first draft of the second.

The plan for these books is for them to sit in the novella length which is to say, 17,500 to 40,000 words (anything about is a novel and anything between 7,500 and 17,500 is a novelette). This means they should be reasonably quick to write, although I can’t manage 9,000 words a day regularly a few thousand is realistic if I can spend the day writing (and not updating social media, websites, marketing, running ads etc etc). Or watching Netflix, that’s more of a productivity problem than the marketing side.

I want to use what’s called a rapid release strategy for the books. That means I’ll be stockpiling them until I have a fair few ready or almost ready, then putting them up one every couple of weeks or so (maybe more frequently depending on how fast I can write). This has the effect that the hungry readers are satisfied and quickly read and buy the next book. Because of the way Amazon works, that improves visibility of the series and makes it more likely to be financially viable.

I love writing, but to do it full time and bring you all the books you want to read, I need to be much more consistent and sell a lot more books. You can help with that by leaving reviews on Amazon or Goodreads of course, telling a friend, liking my social media posts and joining my mailing list. All that sort of stuff means a lot to us, so if you aren’t doing it for me, do it for someone else, especially a fellow indie you like. We have to do it all ourselves you see, from hiring cover designers to editors to marketing the books. It’s an easy job because we don’t get shot at, risk being set on fire, have to deal with children (unless we have our own) or you know, wear skirts and trousers during the working day if we don’t want to.*

*Although I do because it’s generally more productive. Mostly. Ok, I’ve sat here all day in a bathrobe furiously ticking off outstanding tasks from my to do list. But I try and be a good little author so I can give myself a pat on the head and get up and dressed, even if I don’t go out. As a rule, it’s more likely to lead to work than not getting dressed. 🙂

Steampunk Universe

The steampunk world I’m building is full of weird science, fantastic machines, wicked villains, rampant libidos, dashing men, and sultry ladies of action who seek adventure, freedom and a good cup of tea afterwards.

There are two separate story arcs I’m working on for this project. The first is The Tribulations of Dawn a series of novelettes and novellas Dawn, an adventurous heroine who is something of a jack of all trades. She spends her time employed as a bodyguard, private detective and bounty hunter. Hired by Professor Whitlock and his wife Ruth to provide security at the launch of his latest invention, The Galvanic Capacitor, Dawn takes a break to entertain two charming military men. During this irresponsible encounter, The Device, is stolen and Dawn must straighten her dresses to pursue the thieves. Thus begins an ongoing saga as Dawn repeatedly regains and loses The Device, all the while encountering the weird and wonderful side of life in Victoria’s Britain. Dawn will never give up, but will she be able to return The Device to the Professor before it falls into the wrong hands, and causes complete mayhem? 

The second series, The Chronicles of Mercy, will focus around a nineteen-year-old heiress, Mercy. Recently returned from years of education at Europe’s finest boarding schools, Mercy is dismayed to find that her trust fund isn’t yet her. Having received her school reports, the executors of the will have determined that she must remain at Miss Hawk’s Academy, a finishing school for gentlewomen, until such time as she either earns her qualifications there, or she reaches her majority at 25. If she leaves the Academy prematurely, she’ll forfeit the majority of her trust fund to charitable causes and her dream to become the greatest steam-smith of her age, will be dashed. Not only will she be challenged by the task of impressing her Academy instructors and a burgeoning romantic entanglement with an older woman, she’ll also be taking on a deadly conspiracy to attack Britain!

The intention is that the Dawn series will be shorter works, mostly of novella length, though I may also write some shorter stories alongside the main plotline as an aside or bonus. Each should be a quick bite of fiction you can devour in a single sitting. There’ll be a mix of detective work, action, fighting and Dawn will be having a lot of fun with the people she meets along the way.

The Chronicles of Mercy series will be novel length book but I don’t intend to stat writing those until I’ve published quite a few Dawn books. I will probably also wait until I’ve had a chance to revisit the CotWK series so that fans of those books are still being served* before writing the first of the Mercy novels.

Dawn and Mercy inhabit the same universe and will share some of the same friends, contacts and even lovers. In storytelling terms, you get to see your favourite side characters (or rather, mine, unless fans actually tell me which ones they like) more often and the world will be more fleshed out.

While both heroines have an adventurous streak in and out of the bedroom, Dawn is a confirmed singleton and her stories will be erotic action-adventure tales with romance taking a back seat.

Mercy, on the other hand, will have more than her fair share of erotic fun with a selection of folk she meets, but she’ll also have a full romantic storyline with a woman who places a great deal of importance on her adult education and is willing to share her young protege with others (to an extent). 

 *The problem with being a steamy romance and erotica author, is that some lines just bring up entirely distracting imagery 😉 I don’t think what just popped in my head is the fan service people usually mean. 

The Tribulations of Dawn – Storyline

Dawn’s problems begin when she’s distracted by two attractive gentlemen at the announcement of her employer’s new invention. She’s supposed to be providing security, but the Professor’s gizmo is stolen while she’s otherwise engaged.

Determined to make up for her mistake, she sets off in hot pursuit but by the time she catches her light-fingered foe, the item has been passed on.

The gizmo could revolutionise the steam technology industry that has made Britain a power on the world stage. But if the enemies of the Empire get a hold of it, they could use it for nefarious purposes.

So begins Dawn’s long quest to not only recover the gizmo, but keep hold of it long enough to return it to her employer.

Along the way, she must deal with thieves, burglars, Madams, Policemen, Magistrates, ruffians, kidnappers and more!

The first book in the series is out now. You’ll find our heroine already in the middle of her adventures as she visits and exclusive ladies only club in London for clues.

The full title of the book is Dawn and the London Society for Governesses, Young Ladies of Quality and Serving Girls!

Phew, what a mouthful!

The Chronicles of Mercy – Storyline

Orphaned at a young age, Mercy has spent the last decade being educated at Europe’s finest boarding schools. All the while, her desire to focus on science, mathematics and engineering has been thwarted.

Such things are not ladylike or even civilised, her teachers tell her. On the Continent, the pursuit of steam technology is seen as a peculiarly British disease.

Instead, the European schools teach languages, housekeeping, embroidery, manners, formal dancing, music, art, religion and history. The skills that any gentlewoman in need of a husband, might wish to have and which Mercy finds of little practical value.

When Mercy receives word from the executors of her parent’s estate, that her time at schools abroad has finished, she is excited to return to Britain.

Imagining her education is complete and that now she is of age, she will finally be free to use her trust fund to follow in her parent’s footsteps, she is excited to come home.

For Mercy’s mother and father were scientists and engineers and her fondest desire is to become the worlds great steam-smith.

On her return to London, the law firm that handles her trust informs her that she must attend an Academy in England. If Mercy is to inherit, she must do everything she can to win the approval of Miss Hawk, the Headmistress of the Academy.

For if she is expelled, or leaves of her own free will, she will forfeit the majority of her inheritance.

The nervous young lawyer tasked with delivering the bad news warns her that Miss Hawk’s Academy has a reputation for stern discipline.

Along the way, she’ll deal with a fearsome Deputy Head, Prefects, a quite scandalous bounty hunter, a conspiracy to bring Britain to its knees, and much more!

Can Mercy stay out of trouble? What will she learn at the Academy?
